Rainy Lake Gazette: Step Into School is "Community at its best"

It’s not often we, who make our living with words and pictures, are at a loss for words. But we were left in awe of what we witnessed at last week’s Step Into School event, which began at Backus Community Center with dinner and culminated with special rides to Ronnings to shop for shoes.

About 50 local children joined the back-to-school celebration Aug. 7, after applying for the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota’s program that invited K-12 kiddos and their parents to share a community meal, shop for school shoes, and take home other back-to-school essentials like new socks and certificates for haircuts.

What we saw was grownups making personal connections that will last a lifetime with youngsters.
