After a tumultuous year for parents, teachers, and students alike, United Way of Northeastern Minnesota (UWNEMN)’s Imagination Library has emerged as a critically important at-home early literacy program, needed now more than ever for our local children’s preparation for Kindergarten and school success.
As proud Minnesotans, many of us don’t like to ask for help. We give; we don’t take. We support; we don’t lean on anyone. But now, the COVID-19 pandemic has flipped our world, and our old ways of thinking are upside down.

Although the daughter of a mining engineer, “the United Way Lady,” as she was then known, had never actually stepped foot on a mining property until she began working at a local nonprofit agency nearly 30 years ago.
Shelley Valentini, however — whose nickname still sometimes surfaces — was rather quickly acquainted with agglomerators, concentrators, and crushers after taking a job with the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota, where for a long time she was its one and only employee.
Deer hunting is a favorite Minnesota pastime. In fact, it is so popular in this area that it feels like a regional holiday. Everyone here seems to have a deer camp or shack story or two!
United Way of Northeastern Minnesota (UWNEMN)’s annual fundraising campaign is underway, and the process for future beneficiaries of that funding – local non-profit agencies and programs – has also begun.

This is the time of year when United Way of Northeastern Minnesota (UWNEMN) staff are typically out conducting employee campaign fundraiser meetings at businesses across our service territory. This year, however, things look different on UWNEMN’s calendar.
