Buddy Backpack Program

A section of Chisholm's city hall was especially busy last Tuesday. That's because 50 volunteers were packing up food bags for hungry kids.

"We are going to pack 1500 bags in one hour," said Elizabeth Kelly, the coordinator of the Buddy Backpack Program.

The program has grown to feed about 800 kids each week, in northern St. Louis County and Koochiching County.

"These are kids in critical need of food. They come to school with stomach cramps, inability to focus, and dizziness if they are not receiving these meal kits. They need them to get back on track with their peers on Monday morning," Kelly explained further.

Buddy Backpack is just one of several programs managed by the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota.

The agency is celebrating 50 years of service this year.

"It's just exciting to see the amount we've changed, and the partnerships we've developed," Shelley Valentini told us. She's the executive director.

And there's more in store for the United Way this year. They have an exciting announcement we will reveal on Thursday. And we'll be profiling different programs until then.
