Who We Are

The United Way of Northeastern Minnesota was created in 1966 to coordinate the fundraising drives of local businesses interested in supporting human service agencies in the area. Added to the territory this year is the community of Hibbing after the closure of their local office. Over the last 40 years, the organization has grown into the largest United Way (geographically) in the country encompassing more than 40 communities across Northeastern Minnesota.

So how do we keep track of everything and make sure that local people make local decisions?

Our wonderful volunteers!

In addition to our 40 member Board of Directors, we also have separate advisory boards for both Koochiching County and the North Shore. These boards are made up of community business people who help to represent the areas where they live and work. All funding decisions are made by these boards and other area volunteers in each of these geographical areas.

The Board of Directors of the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is comprised of residents of more than fourteen communities across the Iron Range. We are very proud of our diverse board and the unique contributions that each member makes.

Last year, the United Way raised $1,087,589 and distributed funds to more than 90 member agencies and programs working in a variety of fields including programs for persons with disabilities, senior programs, family services, youth programs advocacy groups and emergency services. (See our directory of member agencies for a more comprehensive list.)
